DOT NET is basically a programming framework created by Microsoft. It is intended to be used only on the Windows platform. Contrary to general belief .NET is not a single technology, rather it is a set of technologies that work together seamlessly to solve business problems. DOT NET includes a large library of pre-written codes and solutions to the most common programming problems and a virtual machine that manages the execution of programs written specifically for the framework.

From the end-user’s perspective, .NET is fairly invisible. But a tech-savvy user might feel enlightened to know that .NET is basically a collection of dynamic link libraries. These DLLs might already be installed along with Windows XP on a new machine, or they might be installed during the process of installing an application that uses .NET. The latest version of Windows—Microsoft Windows Vista—includes the .NET Framework 3.0 as an intrinsic part of its architecture.

From a DOT NET programmers perspective, .NET is a huge class library that contains everything needed to write Web applications or client applications—the type of programs sometimes called as ‘regular old Windows apps’.

Programs which are written for the .NET Framework execute in a software environment that manages the program\'s runtime requirements which is also part of the .NET Framework, known as the Common Language Runtime (CLR). The CLR has similar features such as an application virtual machine, so that programmers need not consider the capabilities of a specific CPU that will execute the program. The CLR also provides other important services such as security, memory management, and exception handling. The class library and the CLR together compose the .NET Framework.

The core aspects of the .NET framework lie within the Common Language Infrastructure (CLI). The purpose of the CLI is to provide a language-neutral platform for application development and execution, including functions for exception handling, garbage collection, security, and interoperability. Microsoft\'s implementation of the CLI is called the Common Language Runtime or CLR. Microsoft .NET Framework includes a set of standard class libraries. The class library is organized in a hierarchy of namespaces.

The Microsoft dot net programmers is a collection of software technologies that began emerging from Microsoft Corporation around the turn of the century. The first version of .NET was released early in 2002, and version 1.1 came out in 2003. Version 2.0 was released late in 2005, and Version 3.0 followed in late 2006.
